Mini Fractal Quilt using the Kites Plus Ruler

It’s been so fun to see all of the Fractal quilts over at the Fat Quarter Shop using the Creative Grids Ruler I designed called the Kites Plus Ruler. I couldn’t resist…and had to make one of my own. I’m one of those that doesn’t always follow the directions, so this blog just shows a few of the things that I did a little differently than how Katarina Roccella wrote the pattern.  To begin, though, you can find the free pattern at this link.

I didn’t have time to make a large quilt, so I took advantage of the different sizes that are found on the ruler. I decided on  a miniature, so I used the 2 ½” cutting lines. I also wanted a controlled, scrappy look, so I used the solid-base cutting for the blue pieces. This eliminates one step in sewing, plus removes some of the bulk.

To speed things along, I chain-stitched my y-seams. You will notice that’s a little different than how Kimberly did hers on the video. Chaining 1

Once it was pieced, I did some straight-line quilting and free-motion quilting using Aurifil‘s 50wt cotton thread.

I’m always thankful for the Stitch Regulator on my BERNINA because my free-motion quilting leaves a lot to be desired!!

I should also point out that I wanted it to be a bit longer, so I added another row. You will find you can easily change up patterns with this ruler!!

How fun to create an interesting little quilt from just your scraps! I originally thought it would be a wall hanging, but at 14″ x 18″, it would also be a nice placemat.

The Fat Quarter Shop carries my newest patterns that use the Kites Plus Ruler. Check them out.
