Holiday Doily

Thank you for taking the time to stop by today and taking a look at my block, Holiday Doily. I feel very honored to have been chosen again!!   I hope you have enjoyed the “tour” so far!

Holiday Doily – Block #533

The block has a simple pieced background with easy, raw-edge applique that gives it the lacy, doily effect.

I had done several sketches of what I wanted the block to look like and had an idea of how I would construct it.  Here is the first attempt and I sure wasn’t happy with it (and should have known better!).  I used red rectangles on the outside edges and placed the cream appliques over it.  When sewn together the color change was very obvious.

Not good…

So the  next attempt I used the creams on the outside edge and the applique was now cut out of the red.  A much better result!

Creams have a better consistancy!

I created this small table topper with four blocks, just swapping the greens and reds for two of the blocks.

Yardage & Cutting

Cream A:    (1/2 yard)
        Cut: 2 squares,  7 1/2″  x 7 1/2″

                  8 rectangles, 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

                  Sashing:  2 strips, 2″ x 12 1/2″

                  2 strips, 2″ x 26″

Cream B:    (1/2 yard)
        Cut: 2 squares,  7 1/2″  x 7 1/2″

                  8 rectangles, 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″

                   Sashing: 2 strips, 2″ x 26″

                   2 strips, 2″ x 29″

Red:    (fat quarter)
        Cut:  8 squares,  3 1/2″  x 3 1/2″
                   8  rectangles, 6 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ (applique)
Green:   (3/4  yard)
        Cut: 8 squares,  3 1/2″  x 3 1/2″
                  8  rectangles, 6 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ (applique)
                  Borders:  2 strips, 5″ x 29″
                                     2 strips, 5″ x 38″

Although, the magazine wrote the directions to cut triangles for the hour-glass block, I choose to make the center with the Clearly Perfect Angles.  I documented the process as I was stitching the quilt.  If you follow my blog, you know how I hate to take the time to draw lines!

In this first picture you can see how I am going to sew 1/4″ on each side of the center point.  Even though the square is large, it isn’t a problem…after aligning on the angled gray band, I began stitching using the angled green lines to keep the correct angles!

Using green bands to sew 1/4″ on each side of center points.

Notice: No lines were drawn!! Ready to be cut  apart.

To create the hour glass, simply rotate the half-square triangles so colors are opposing and stitch 1/4″ from each side of center points once again.  I pinned them so that I was sure the seams would match. (You will now have 4 centers for the quilt blocks)

Creating hour-glass block.

Follow the directions for the block on page 34 and simply put it together as the above picture shows.  Easy enough!!

Holiday Doily quilt is found on page 14.
